All This and Heaven Too By Rachel Field VINTAGE
Rare First Reprint September 1938
Hardcover with colored embossed fabric covered boards
This novel is based on the true story of the author's great aunt Henriette Deluzy-Desportes, a French governess who fell in love with her employer Charles de Choiseul, Duke of Praslin (Charles Laure Hugues Théobald; 29 June 1805 24 August 1847) who was a French nobleman and politician, and who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies in 18381842. When Duc de Praslin's wife was murdered, Henriette Deluzy-Desportes was implicated in the murder. The scandal contributed to the political turmoil prior the French Revolution of 1848 which deposed King Louis Philippe I.
This book was widely popular and re-printed several times in 1938. Look at that signature page in the beginning as you can see it was loaned to so many in such a short time!
Because of this popularity the book was made into a film starring Bette Davis as Henriette in 1940.
My pre-loved books may show signs of shelf wear or use, which may include smudges, tears, fading, bumped corners, label or tape evidence, etc... all giving the look of having been read and loved - and making for a charming and "authentic" home decor choice.
This book is in good condition considering its age - I urge you to give it a read - its really very good.
If you love this story (as I do), this is the edition to have.
Thanks for looking!
