Fabulous sand cast sterling Navajo Naja pendant and bench bead necklace. This amazing handmade necklace features six smaller Naja pendants and a larger central Naja pendant with a dog tooth set turquoise cabochon. These handmade sand cast pendants are strung onto a 25 and 1/2" long "bench bead" necklace. Bench beads or bench made beads refer to beads that are handmade using partially manufactured metal. "Naja" is the Navajo word for "cresent" and is thought to have originated from Moorish design who used it on their horse bridles as a protective talisman to ward off evil. It was then borrowed by the Spanish who in turn passed on again to Navajo silversmiths who were the primary Native American tribe to incorporate it into their work (it was also used in Pueblo silver design). This necklace features earlier Moorish "hands of Fatima" design on the Naja pendants. Has a traditional silver clasp This one of a kind necklace is 3 ounces of sterling silver and in fine condition.
