The year 1964 will mark two significant occasions in the history of Montana; the 100th anniversary of the Montana Territory and the 75th anniversary of statehood. The first white man believed to have entered Montana's present boundaries was a Canadian Chevalier de la Verendrye, who came in 1743. The famed Lewis and Clark Expedition arrived at Montana's eastern border on April 5, 1805. The first discovery of gold was made in 1862 by John White at Grasshopper Creek and the town of Bannack came into existence. Montana became & a territory on May 26, 1864, and was granted statehood on November 8, 1889.
