Eight Mu Wang horse sculptures hand-carved out of red boxwood. They range in size from 2.5" to 3 " long and from 2" to 3" high. They each have inset glass eyes and intricately carved bodies and bases in a beautiful reddish finish. Together, they create an impressive display, but can be placed individually for impact. These represent all eight divine horses of Emperor Wang Mu (of the 10th century) and the 5th emperor of the Zhou dynasty. Emperor Wang Mu had a deep admiration for horses and the legend states that these divine horses pulled his chariot into the heavens. These were purchased in Okinawa in the early 1960’s. Rare to find a full set of 8 in excellent condition.
