UNGEMACH POTTERY CO, or UPCO. UPCO was founded by Fred Ungemach in 1937 in Roseville, Ohio. I believe he was once a designer for McCOY pottery. UPCO was noted for its attractive designs, good glazes, and durability. This white planter certainly fits all those criteria. It has a very modern design, that of two rectangles which overlap atop an oval base. The rectangles have a design in them which makes them appear to be woven baskets, yet they almost have an oriental quality as well. The full UPCO mark is on the base, but it is hard to see because of the thick glaze. UPCO pottery was sold in 1984.
